dct:description "<para>The Mollusk Division incorporates approximately 5 million specimens and has long ranked amongst the most important freshwater and land snail collections in North America. Approximately 251,000 cataloged lots including over 406 holotype specimens and more than 1638 paratype lots are preserved as dry shells, ethanol preserved specimens, frozen tissues, lyophilized tissues, fossil material and radular microscope slide mounts. Mollusks from all regions of the planet are represented, with most being from North America, particularly from southeastern and upper mid‐western USA drainages. With the exception of Monoplacophora and Aplacophora, all extant molluscan classes are represented. The collection includes a number of significant subcollections; Bryant Walker Collection (one of the world’s largest private mollusk collections containing over 100,000 lots and about two million specimens), Royal Ontario Museum Collection [outstanding collection of North American (principally Canadian) freshwater and land mollusks], F. C. Baker Wisconsin Freshwater Mollusk Collection (one of the most extensive North American freshwater mollusk collections), Stelfox Sphaeriid Collection (one of the most important reference collections of cosmopolitan freshwater bivalve family Sphaeriidae), and Lyophilized Tahitian Land Snails (about 1600 freeze‐dried tissue samples of a now largely extinct snail family).</para>" ;

dct:description """<para>Through the efforts of University of Michigan faculty-curators and staff, the Museum of Zoology (UMMZ) develops and maintains excellent zoological collections explicitly for use in research and education benefiting science, society, and the university.

The faculty staff and various graduate students of the Birds Division conduct research on the phylogenetic relationships, evolution and behavior of a wide variety of birds using museum collections, molecular techniques, and captive and field studies.

The skins collection consists of approximately 176,000 specimens (6th largest in North America; about 2/3 of the species of the world), housed in 224 cases (133 double, 190 single, 1 triple), approximately 5000 sq. feet. In addition to study skins, the collection also includes other special preparations such as 1457 flat pelts and 636 spread wings and tails.
The skin collection contains 317 holotypes and 3 lectotypes. These are not available for loan. An annotated list is available (UMMZ Misc. Publ. No. 174, R. W. Storer, 1988). A list and images of our types are available electronically. Extinct species are represented also.

The skeletons collection represents approximately 23,800 specimens, 3,500 species (4th largest in the world in number of specimens, 2nd in number of species after the U.S. National Museum) stored in 60 cases, approximately 700 sq. feet. The only families missing are: Mesoenatidae, Rhynochetidae, Dromadidae, Leptosomatidae, Oxyrunchidae, Acanthisittidae, Atrichornithidae, Hyposittidae, and Callaeidae. About 1/2 of the skeleton specimens are from the United States. dct:description "<para>The Division of Reptiles and Amphibians maintains a collection that is worldwide in scope and is the second largest of its kind in the world. Presently, the research collections contain over 200,000 catalogued lots representing nearly a half million individual specimens, which includes nearly 500 primary type specimens with high resolution digital images. The average growth over the last ten years has been nearly 1500 specimens per year. Our auxiliary research collections include skeletal preparations (both dry and cleared & stained), frozen tissue samples, radiographs, kodachrome slides, digital images including CT scans, histological micro slides, and a large collection (over 250,000 records) of ecological vouchers collected from our Edwin S. George Reserve in Livingston County, Michigan. Additionally, .pdf versions of our valuable Field Notebook Collection and a collection of 37 audio tapes containing hundreds of recordings of anuran vocalizations has been digitized and can be accessed via the Division's webpage and the University of Michigan Digital Library. All of the above mentioned collections have been inventoried and the data associated with them have been entered into, and maintained in computer databases, with representative samples presented by the Digital Library.</para>" ;
